The short answer
If a BMO credit card purchase is not changing your current balance, check the Pending section and your available credit. BMO says a pending purchase reduces available credit but is not reflected in the current balance until it posts. Posting may take up to five business days.
If you recently paid the card, the payment and balance can move on different schedules. BMO says a payment may be reflected immediately when made through a branch or BMO digital banking, while the balance can still take two to three business days to update.
What to check first
Open the BMO credit card account and compare the number that looks wrong with the activity underneath it. The current balance, available credit, pending purchases, and last statement do not answer the same question.
- Look under Pending for the purchase. Pending amounts reduce available credit before they enter the current balance.
- Compare available credit with the current balance. A change in available credit can be the first sign that BMO authorized the purchase.
- Do not expect the statement balance to change. It records the previous billing cycle and stays fixed until a new statement is issued.
- If you made a payment, confirm how and when it was sent and whether BMO shows it as posted.
Why a BMO purchase may still be pending
BMO says pending transactions may take up to five business days to post. Hotels, gas stations, and car-rental companies can place a temporary hold that differs from the final purchase. The correct amount appears when the transaction posts.
You may briefly see the same purchase in both Pending and Posted while BMO finishes moving it. BMO says this does not mean you were charged twice. Some activity, including interest and fees, can also post without first appearing as pending.
If your BMO payment has not updated the balance
BMO says payments are processed on the day they are received. Even so, the displayed balance can take two to three business days to update. A payment sent from another financial institution may take several days to reach BMO before it can be applied.
Check that the money left the source account, look for BMO's Posted Payment status or alert, and avoid sending a duplicate payment just because the balance has not moved yet. If the published timing has passed, contact BMO for the account record.
When to contact BMO
A pending purchase cannot be disputed until it posts because its amount or status may still change. If you recognize the merchant, wait through the normal posting window and keep the receipt.
If a posted transaction is wrong or unfamiliar, BMO lets eligible customers start a dispute from the credit card details in Online Banking. Contact BMO immediately if you suspect fraud, and contact the bank if a payment remains missing after its expected processing time.
How LiveSpend shows BMO spending sooner
LiveSpend can use BMO Authorized Transaction alert emails as an earlier signal than the posted balance. In BMO's alert settings, choose email delivery and the purchase threshold you want. When a recognized alert reaches the Gmail inbox connected to LiveSpend, the purchase can enter your current cycle total.
That gives you a running view of BMO card spending with recent purchases, categories, budgets, spending pace, and a forecast without sharing your BMO username or password. You can also combine BMO cards with eligible cards from other banks.
LiveSpend is a spending-awareness tool, not BMO's account record. A purchase below your alert threshold, a delayed email, or an unsupported transaction may be missing or late. Use BMO for posted amounts, payments, available credit, fraud, and disputes.
