The short answer
CIBC says its current balance does not include pending transactions. A purchase can therefore reduce available credit while the displayed balance stays unchanged, and CIBC says a pending transaction can take up to five days to post.
A payment can also affect available credit before it reaches the balance. CIBC's Cardholder Agreement says some payments from a CIBC account can adjust available credit but remain unposted for up to three business days after receipt.
What to check first
Make sure you are comparing the right CIBC numbers. The current balance is what CIBC currently shows as owed from posted activity, while the statement's total balance records the amount at the end of the previous statement period.
- Open recent transactions and look for the purchase under Pending.
- Check available credit. CIBC says a pending purchase removes spending room even though it is not yet in the current balance.
- Do not expect the previous statement's total balance or amount due to change during the new cycle.
- For a payment, review its status and the method used rather than relying only on the balance.
Why a CIBC purchase may not be in the current balance
A CIBC pending transaction has been approved but has not posted. The amount is no longer available to spend, but it is not added to the current balance until posting, which can take up to five days.
A merchant hold can differ from the final charge, especially for travel, fuel, tips, or foreign-currency purchases. Wait for the transaction to post before treating the pending amount as final.
If your CIBC payment has not updated
CIBC states that a payment is not applied to the balance until it posts. Some transfers or bill payments from a CIBC account can adjust available credit first and take up to three business days to post after receipt.
Cash or cheque payments may be subject to hold periods that are typically three to five business days. CIBC also notes that in some cases a received but unposted payment will not update the balance until the next statement. Check the payment status in CIBC Online or Mobile Banking before making another payment.
When to contact CIBC
For a recent purchase you recognize, wait through the pending window and contact the merchant if the final posted amount is wrong. CIBC generally asks customers to try resolving a recognized purchase with the merchant before opening a dispute.
Contact CIBC immediately if a transaction is unfamiliar or you suspect fraud. You should also contact it when a payment or purchase remains unresolved beyond the timing that applies to your payment method.
How LiveSpend shows CIBC spending sooner
LiveSpend uses eligible CIBC credit card transaction alert emails as an early record of a purchase. With CIBC alerts going to the connected Gmail inbox, a recognized purchase can enter your running total while CIBC still lists it as pending and excludes it from the current balance.
LiveSpend automatically brings together recent purchases, categories, budgets, spending pace, insights, and a forecast. It uses read-only Gmail access and never asks for your CIBC Online Banking password.
Alert delivery is not the same as final posting. A delayed or missing CIBC alert can create a delayed or missing LiveSpend entry, and the final merchant amount can change. Use CIBC for official balances, available credit, payment status, fraud, and disputes.
