The short answer
Scotiabank says pending purchases are deducted from available credit but not from the balance owing. A pending transaction can remain on the account for up to seven days, so the balance can look behind even though the card has already reserved the amount.
For a card payment, timing depends on how it was made. Scotiabank says an account transfer may take up to one business day to appear. A pre-authorized payment from another financial institution can be held for up to five business days before the amount becomes available to use.
What to check first
Open the credit card's Account Activity page and compare the current balance, available credit, most recent payment, and pending transactions. Scotiabank presents these separately because they can update at different times.
- Look for the purchase under Pending. It can reduce available credit without changing the balance owing.
- Check whether the same purchase appears as both pending and posted. Scotiabank says this temporary overlap does not mean you were charged twice.
- Review the available credit, which reflects pending activity even when the balance does not.
- If you made a payment, check whether it was a transfer, AutoPay, or a payment from another institution.
Why a Scotiabank transaction may stay pending
Scotiabank includes purchases, payments, pre-authorizations, and other unfinished activity in the pending category. Those items can remain there for up to seven days.
Gas stations and other merchants may place a hold that is larger than the final purchase. The hold reduces available credit, then the actual amount appears once the merchant completes the transaction. If the purchase is recognizable, wait for it to post before judging the final amount.
If your Scotiabank payment has not updated
Scotiabank says a transfer used to pay the credit card may take up to one business day to appear. If a pre-authorized payment comes from another financial institution, the payment can be applied to the account while its amount remains unavailable for up to five business days.
Confirm that the payment left the source account and review the most recent payment in Account Activity. Do not send the same payment again solely because available credit or the balance has not caught up.
When to contact Scotiabank
For a purchase you recognize, allow the pending period to finish and contact the merchant if the posted amount is wrong. Contact Scotiabank if the item remains unresolved beyond the stated timing or if a payment is missing.
If you do not recognize a transaction, lock the card if appropriate and contact Scotiabank immediately. The bank's account activity and statement remain authoritative for payments, disputes, and the final amount owed.
How LiveSpend shows Scotiabank spending sooner
LiveSpend can use Scotia InfoAlert emails for purchases above a limit you choose. When a recognized alert reaches the connected Gmail inbox, LiveSpend can add the purchase to your current cycle total before the pending amount reaches the balance owing.
The running view includes recent purchases, categories, budgets, spending pace, weekly insights, and a forecast. LiveSpend uses read-only Gmail access and does not ask for your Scotia OnLine username or password.
Scotiabank says a newly selected InfoAlert may take up to 24 hours to begin arriving. Alert thresholds, delivery delays, and missing messages can also affect LiveSpend, so use Scotiabank for official balances, available credit, payments, fraud, and disputes.
